Randy Villars

Levels

Leviathan Records is proud to introduce saxophone and piano extraordinaire Randy Villars and his debut cd "Levels". Randy's music can best be described as adventurous contemporary jazz. From the highly accessible "Riverwalk" to the piano masterpiece "Kaizen" to the traditional jazz sounds of "I Remember Jimmy" Randy will always leave the listener impressed. Originally a classically trained musician, Randy was selected the outstanding instrumentalist at the prestigious Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz festival and has held the position of Graduate Teacher at Ohio State University. Without realizing it, you have probably heard Randy before as he has contributed many pieces of music for such TV shows as "As the World Turns", "Guiding Light", "Another World", "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" as well as films scores for Time/Life and the A&E cable network. Randy also has at least one gold record from his numerous session appearances. Randy, currently based in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, has also honed his skills by playing live with John Scofield, Ramsey Lewis, Ben Vereen, Sonny Stitt, Eddie Harris, James Moody, Dave Matthews and many other fine musicians. Randy sites saxophone influences such as Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Michael Brecker and David Sanborn. His main piano influences include Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans and Herbie Hancock. Randy also says "I have always been a big fan of Pat Metheny's music and although he is a guitar player, he has definitely influenced my musical thinking." "Levels" by Randy Villars is one of the freshest and most enjoyable releases for all jazz fans in recent memory. With every listen you will appreciate the sheer talent of this saxophonist, keyboardist, pianist, composer, arranger and producer. A very enjoyable piece of music!
