Interview by Lars Lolk of Antenna Magazine/Denmark 9/13/2004

Please state your name and position in the band.

David T. Chastain: I am the guitarist, songwriter and producer.

Please give me an update on the current status in your band.

David T. Chastain: Our new Cd "In An Outrage" has just been released around the world. The current band is myself on guitar, Kate French on vocals, Larry Howe plays drums and Dave Starr plays bass. We are considering some touring offers in the US, Mexico and Europe.

Give me a detailed report on how the studio recordings progressed.

David T. Chastain: I write the music. I then record a demo of the music with a drum machine and my bass playing. I send the tape out to Kate who begins writing the lyrics and melodies. At the same time Dave and Larry begin practicing their parts. I begin to record the real guitar parts as does Kate the vocals. Dave then records his. Larry is the last to record. Everything is sent to me for evaluation. If all is OK, I then send the stuff to Germany to Christian Schmid to mix and master. The mastered version comes back to me and I then do numerous edits in ProTools to get a version of the Cd that I think works best.

Please elaborate on your musical backgrounds in order to shed some light on your current activities.

David T. Chastain: I have been in Chastain for nearly 20 years. Kate joined in 1995. Larry and Dave, both from Vicious Rumors, joined a couple of years back. I also play in another band called SOUTHERN GENTLEMEN that plays heavy blues rock. I also record solo instrumental Cds from time to time.

What activities are you involved in besides this specific band?

David T. Chastain: Besides the above I also produce other bands such as Firewind, Kenziner, and Stephen Fredrick's new band. I also have a song I wrote on the new Cans Cd, the title track "Beyond the Gates." His main band Hammerfall also covered one of my old Chastain songs, "Angel of Mercy" on their Crimson Thunder Cd. I also help run Leviathan Records and Diginet Music here in the US.

What was the proudest moment in your musical career so far?

David T. Chastain: Actually my greatest accomplishment is the release of over 350 of my songs on Cds! And not really a "Dog" in the bunch! Of course some are better than others. And also when someone writes or tells me that a certain song has had an impact on their life.

What will presumably happen to your band in the near future?

David T. Chastain: We will gauge the reaction to the new Cd and decide whether to tour and/or begin working on the next Cd. I am a workaholic and I really love the studio.

Feel free to add a final comment.

David T. Chastain: For fans of strong traditional metal, the CHASTAIN "In An Outrage" Cd will be a perfect Cd for you. Thanks for the support through the years and spread the word. And oh yeah....sorry about George Bush being such a menace to the rest of the world.
